Patchwork

The final piece of my thesis was this bidirectional fabric patchwork "tapestry". The concept behind the piece was to visualize decision-making. After designing and making a small custom knife, I stretched a 60"x 36" canvas and asked my peers to approach and then cut into the canvas with the knife. Some cut more violently, slashing at the piece, and others were more deliberate using the knife as a paintbrush. After cutting the canvas, I asked them to select a fabric that they had an immediate reaction to. I cut fabric patches for their personalized destruction of the canvas and patched the piece. The result was a tapestry where each fabric was a representation of a specific person. One side is a colorful and somewhat playful interaction of a variety of interesting colors and textures. The other side is a more violent collection of marks, with a small amount of color peeking through the slashes.
