Free- Bent Sculpture
To learn about bent lamination, I created a sculpture with a free-bent bottom and a traditionally-laminated top. The process involved securing the pieces into the form and tightly wrapping it with a bike innertube whose elastic property acted as a clamping force. This allowed me to secure the wrapped section into the position I wanted within the limits of the flexibility of the wood. After making all eight segments, I tapered them down from the straight section. These straight sections were then mitered on the table saw. After gluing the octagonal center section together, the top was cut at a slope on a band saw. This sculpture was constructed using 1/8th" ash veneer cut on the table saw.
